JUST DON’T QUIT! Why simple is hard, conviction and vision are underrated, and company culture is the secret ingredient to building strong teams and businesses.
Wasn’t it Einstein who said, “the definition of genius is taking the complex and making it simple”…and yet, in business, we have a tendency to over-complicate what should be kept simple and underestimate the most basic yet powerful practices that prove to be critical ingredients to leading today.

In this session, Autumn will share her lessons in leadership as an entrepreneur and leader in tech, while trying to figure out how to prioritize herself and her family through it all. Autumn will share how she has learned to lead with confidence and conviction, but not without hesitation, uncertainty, and a lot of trial-and-error. She will dig into the core operational practices that were the foundational keys to her success starting, scaling, and exiting a market-leading technology company, and what she learned that has helped her become a better leader, woman, and mother.

A Tale of Woe, Chaos, and Business
DevOps and the subsequent move to bring security in under the umbrella of DevSecOps has created a new ethos for security. This is good. But, when things go wrong–and we know they will–are we going to be successful with the DevSecOps model, or will we be left searching yet again?

In an attempt to answer this question, we will look back in time over 120 years to unveil a tale that touches on business, engineering, and resilience. We will see how engineering decisions affect the lives of those around us and even though the world has radically changed over the last century, we are still facing many of the same root challenges.

Along the way, we will highlight the high-performing DevSecOps teams of today and introduce a framework for approaching DevSecOps in your organization. Topics range from empathy to lean to system safety with the hope to frame a new playbook for devs, ops, and security to work together.

Data Cleansing Strategies for your BigDataOps Team
When working with AI/ML classification or categorization, data cleansing and standardization are critical to developing a good model. Most AI/ML algorithms do not handle missing data values. Good data with a simple model will be more effective than a bad data with a sophisticated model. The process of cleansing is easier when you are dealing with smaller data sets. It is much easier to look data quality issues or missing elements and fix them with some reasonable values (e.g. mean value for a continuous data element). This is not scalable when you deal with millions or billions or trillions of rows of data where finding anomalies in your data set is a daunting task. This presentation recommends different strategies your BigDataOps team can employ to prepare the data for AI/ML modeling.

Every innovation and technology venture began when its founder set out to solve with a very human problem. With the immense pressure to stick to project timelines and constantly solve the numerous small steps on the long road to solving that human problem, it's understandable that the big picture goal can get lost along the way. Staying connected to the "Why" of your work not only keeps you motivated in executing your piece of the puzzle, but gives the venture as a whole the best chance to realize its potential. This presentation will explore how those immersed in the technical and innovation realm can access and leverage the purpose and passion in their work.

Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning: A New Imperative for the C-Suite and IT Executive Leadership
Twenty years ago, Bill Gates spoke about creating a “digital nervous system” for a business that was connected both internally and externally using networks, servers, PCs, and the internet. That vision has largely been achieved on a bigger and richer scale. Today what used to be an idea straight out of “science fiction” is now becoming a “science reality” with the convergence of massive processing power, storage, and connectivity. Machine learning and its capabilities are already imbedded in many advanced products - and the number different intelligence and learning applications for a business to choose and utilize is growing exponentially.

Since 2012, Russ Finney has served in parallel as a researcher with the itmWEB Group, as an advisory partner with the Stratamation Network, and a business and strategy Lecturer at the University of Texas McCombs School of Business. From these perspectives, and the associated research, he is seeing and sharing the critical paths and trends that the most successful companies are taking to plan and maximize their own use of artificial intelligence and machine learning to serve both customers and internal employees. Artificial intelligence is creating significant new efficiencies for business and, as a result, these improvements are creating the additional space for employees to be more innovative and to add more value. In this talk, Russ explains exactly how organizations are making this happen.

Prior to his current research and teaching, Russ worked as a CIO in the semiconductor, aerospace, and financial services industries for over 20 years. In 2016, he was named a Top 5 executive CIO Influencer through social media by Apollo Research (@rfinney). The key take-away ideas from this presentation are IT executive action items and approaches which can be immediately applied at any company - no matter the size or sophistication.

Agile without Tools: Get Started with Office or Google Suite
Don’t Buy Tools First!

Google Suites or Microsoft Office 365, are all you need to start your Agile Implementation! Senior Leaders and Staff are told they need to first buy or trial Tools to guide their Agile Implementation.

This is bass-ackwards!

Vendors and consultants drive Agile Implementations. They are paid by the number of seats you buy. Don’t buy into that! Use familiar tools to leverage hyperlinks and collaborations.
Lay out, pilot, and implement Agile processes across at least a couple of teams. Tweak those processes over a couple of projects. Then track how much manual time you are spending, then consider Software Tools.

Today we show how to use your free or low-cost productivity tools at your shop. You can start, pilot, and implement Agile without buying tools.

Dude, Where’s My Flying Car?
It was only a year or so ago that futurists and technology futures companies were purporting that self-driving vehicles were within grasp; that adoption of this technology would be similar to that of the smart phone; and that the way people get around will drastically change. Why are we still working on similar concepts that our predecessors did 20 years ago, even 40 years ago? We haven’t even really begun to solve the engineering and technical challenges surrounding autonomous ground transportation, meanwhile the hype focus has elevated from ground transportation to drones. This fire-side chat will delve into why mobility technologies take longer to go to market than other similar innovations and how human experiential learning is a key enabler to us all getting our flying car eventually.

Crypto Testing Leading to Better Security
The cryptography is the hard core providing data Confidentiality, Integrity and Authenticity. Crypto algorithms are used to encrypt sensitive data (e.g. password files), to authenticate users for physical or network access, to digitally sign the financial transactions. While the IoT gets integrated into our daily lives in an alarmingly influential way (e.g. remotely control home appliances) and gazillions of data are stored out of our control (e.g. cloud platforms), using cryptography for data protection is inevitable. It’s fair to say that information security can hardly exist without cryptography, but getting cryptography right is a very challenging task.
